You Don’t Like Gucci?

Gucci-Mane-tt01

No payment of monies or any other types of Payola was received in the writing of this post.

Neither did I.

First heard of Gucci Mane a coupla years ago when he did that song “Icy” with Young Jeezy. That song was so bad I think I threw up in my mouth the first time I heard it.

It was around this  time that I read in the news about how Gucci (real name Radric Davis) had some beef with Young Jeezy as to who got bragging rights over “Icy”, said beef resulting with a squad of four dudes running up home invasion style on Gucci, to duff him out, allegedly hired/sent by Jeezy. What had happened though, was that young Radric stayed strapped and ended up bucking one’a the intended assailants dead. Funny thing is how the dead assailant’s body wasn’t found until three days later in the backwoods where he was shot, and how Gucci went on about his business knowing where said body laid. Not funny like lol, but funny like in what one would expect to see in a movie.  I remember thinking how even though he made some shitty music, Gucci Mane was kinda’ gully. Automatic street cred even.

Top of this year, I started hearing about this cat O.J. Da Juice Man on that oh so turrible Jadakiss song “Who’s Real” featuring Alicia Key’s boyfriend Swizz Beat. NY radio must have bonked me in the head with that a million times before something clicked.  As much as I respect Jada as a lyricist and as much as I hate that song, O.J.’s performance, as coonish as it sounded, ended up being the highlight. His performance standing out for how it rachets up the ignorance level of that song up a couple notches. And just right.

I didn’t even know how Gucci and O.J. ran together until I started hearing more songs with the both of them together.

Like “Make The Trap Say Aye”:

Production was tight, even though the raps was Mickey Mouse. Still, even in the simplicity of their words, the contrast between Gucci and OJ started sticking. There was some type of chemistry going. Maybe it was how there was no way they could ever be taken serious about their craft, even if they were, and yet kept going. I didn’t exactly know.  It was something.

By the time Gucci made his feature on Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” remix, his ad-libs became so infectious that I’d find myself shouting out “Gucci!” on the random. Got my baby daughter saying it too. Every time I shouted it out, it made me feel kinda good. Like I was letting go of some tension. Like it was fun. Therapeutic. Really. Even got one of the homettes in the crew shouting out “Sushi” in Gucci’s voice when ever it’s time for, well, sushi. Shits and giggles.

When they dropped the Mario joint “Break Up” featuring Gucci Mane and Sean Garrett, I was sold. Production on that joint is so crazy, and ya’ll can’t tell me Gucci doesn’t murder the track, even though he stays on Bugs Bunny rhyme mode.

I was really confused, how in the eff could I be falling for the okey doke? I stayed strong not believing in Lil Wayne’s hypebeast for so long, so why this? Why now? How the fuck could Gucci and OJ’s music be sounding good to me? Maybe I  started falling off. Needing to put the booze down. Confounded and desperate, last month I twittered Todd Moscowitz , EVP of  Warner Music Groups and the dude signing paychecks to Gucci, out of panic, and for his suggestion as to why I had a new found  fondness for Gucci Mane’s Music. His response “You obviously appreciate the finer things in life and have vision. Why wouldn’t you like Gucc? He’s great. OJ is part of the camp.”  Typical smug Todd Moscowitz okey doke, which of course was no help.

Recently, after Gucci hit me in the head with the monster of a hit “Wasted” featuring Plies, it hit me. Industry Rule #0001. Production. Production. Production. The key to ANY hit is production. And Gucci keeps coming heavy with dope production. Regardless if you don’t have an ear for this or not, you can’t deny the heat behind the beat. Consistent too. Gucci’s production ears right now is greater than Jay-Z’s and Nas put together. Not that that’s saying much these days, but I said it. Then there’s the flow.

I  don’t think I’ll ever expect to hear Gucci drop some science like how my favorite rappers do, but that ni**a will rock a beat in a minute. So what if he’s Scooby Doo, his raps blend with the music like an instrument. The juxtaposition of what’s reality and what insanity reality might be in Gucci Mane’s mind reminds me of East Coast cartoon rapper Cam’ron. The audacity. The swagger. The ignorance of it all. Like Cam’ron’s. Gucci’s movement is like the Southern equivalent  to Dip Set’s in their hey day. When Jim was still riding as Capo. Funny how Todd Moscowitz was signing checks to the Dips heavy then too. Heh. Incidentally, Cam’ron dropped one of my favorite albums this year.

So Cartoon rap is what I want to listen to these days. Hanna Barbera even. Gucci and O.J. sounding like straight up Black cartoon characters. On wax. In a good way. One of the homies just sent me a link to the latest member of the click’s recent material. His name is Wocka Flocka Flame. Really. Cartoon rap. I hope it’s dope.

In the end, I truly understand the uproar volleyed last week against the 1515 crew’s controversial  Hottest Emcees In The Game list which placed Gucci at #6. I’m also not mad at Gucci’s rank.  For real for real, it’s only entertainment. And right now I’m being entertained. I’m actually working on seeing how we can get a Gucci Mane/ Cam’ron show to pop here in NYC. Call it A Grand Night Of Ignorance. Really. Brrrrr!

I also need one of these new hoodies in my life. Non fugazi though.

“wow! So now if I don’t like ALL the southern rappers, I have no credibility.”
    ^^
I never said that, but your shakily faint reasoning for not liking Gucci can be applied to some of the other Southern rappers you named, so your argument doesn’t hold up.

I don’t care if you’re white or Black, that was an analogy.

“Pimp C was a lyrical beast. You hear me? A lyrical beast. Anybody wanna say I’m wrong? Is Gucci lyrical at all? I don’t think so.”
    ^^^
Shit like this makes me think you’re just arguing for the sake of it…I don’t have a problem with you saying Pimp C was lyrical, but you gave no reasoning as to why you think he’s lyrical and why that same reasoning doesn’t apply to Gucci who uses many poetic devices in his raps (alliteration, assonance, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, Onomatopoeia, different rhyme schemes, different flows, Imagery, personification, repetition etc…, use of words that aren’t regularly used in the Hiphop lexicon)….Aside from the fact that you’re speaking about Gucci’s music even after admitting you haven’t listened to much of it, if you can’t appreciate or don’t like Gucci’s music FINE, nobody is forcing you to, but don’t start going around trying to tell people his shit is inferior or that they’re inferior for liking it…Matter of fact, I’m wrong, keep doing that, that’s hiphop to a certain degree, but just know that your arguments as they are in their present state hold No Weight.

@1979, I give you props. I admit, it’s hard to talk to an NY cat about a legend and try to compare him to another legend without the NY guy trippin’ a lil. I can’t really blame them though, shit NY shit makes me feel like I’m from NY. They just seem to relate to the real struggle (a lot of times) and they tend to show both the good and the bad sides. Plus, in NY, you cannot get on without being good with the wordplay (i think that’s how it still is and please make an exception for MIMS, he does not count). But, that’s another good point I just made. You see how MIMS got dogged by New York? Yeah his song was kinda catchy but niggas in NY only gave this nigga 4 minutes. After that, they burned him. NY cats don’t let these bullshit niggas rise to power and support them. NY will cut they legs out. I don’t know, the south don’t seem to be like that. Not only do they let bullshit pass, they celebrate when that shit takes over the radio. True, New York needs to redefine itself.

@Detroit, “I don’t have a problem with you saying Pimp C was lyrical, but you gave no reasoning as to why you think he’s lyrical and why that same reasoning doesn’t apply to Gucci”. I don’t have to give a reason as to why I think Pimp C is was lyrical, you can listen to the shit and hear it. When you hear a line and say to yourself “Daaaaaaaamn!” over and over and over again, that pretty much will let you know if a guy is lyrical. The reason why i never listened to a lot of Gucci (i listened to enough) is because that nigga never made me say “wow” or “daaaaamn!” not even one time. Not by what he said. Not by how he said it. And dude, you DID basically say that I have no credibility. I quote

“Cus I’m calling bullshit on your whole “i like Southern rappers, I just don’t like this Southern rappers even though he’s not that different from some of the southern rappers I just named”

You sound like a white guy saying “I’m not racist, I happen to be friends with a couple black people”

So first of all, you’re saying you don’t believe that I really like southern rappers when I said I did. If you’re calling me a liar, how much credibility does that leave me with if you are right? Also, the white guy who uses that “i happen to be friends with a couple of black people” results in a loss of credibility for the white guy saying it 99% of the time. I’m not trying be an asshole. For real, i’m not but don’t have me explaining YOUR argument to YOU in this shit.

I got to be Destiny’s Child”

    “You’ll get sideswiped

Real Talk, this is New York lyricism:

    Jim Jones?

    Maino?

    Memphis Fucking Bleek?

    Rakim after 1994?

    Uncle Murda?

    Tony Fucking Yayo?

I’m nauseous even typing that list, and that’s not counting the wackass white boys and backpackers.

And even if you like lyrics, tell me you really LISTEN to Jean Grae complainging about everything (since her first album!) or can bump Talib more than a verse at a time?

Sure, I’d love, say, Jeru to have production as hot as Gucci, OJ or Playaz Circle but until then…

@Alantanal, no none of the people you named are good in my opinion. I gotta take a deep breath when you talk about Rakim. I wouldn’t play Willie D like that, ya feel me? But, I think Rakim does have some decent recent tracks floating around. Nah, I mean Raekwon, Mobb Deep (the real Mobb Deep, not the shit that sound like G-Unit), Sean Price (even though he does not try to make hits, he just spits hard as fuck), Skyzoo, Jay Z, Jada (except for his albums)Fab(same as Jada). But right now New York is a little lost. They don’t understand that you need to be able to make people dance too in this day and age. Once they master that shit again, the U.S. map is in trouble. Y’all member what it was like when NY dominated. They had that shit on lock.

I’m not saying you don’t like Southern Rappers…I’m saying you specifically don’t like Gucci for some assinine reason you concocted in your head…but if you applied the same reasoning to some of the artists you named your argument wouldn’t hold up.

What I’m basically saying is You don’t like Gucci because you DONT WANT to like Gucci, because he goes against your perceived notions of whats good and you can’t understand why other people like him, so now because of this you’ve built up this unnecessary resentment for Gucci Mane

which is fine with me, but stop trying to support your stance by romanticizing all of these aesthetics of rap as if they’re the end all be all to appreciating the music…that just sounds like bullshit to me, no offense.

@1979, I’m not from NY and I would never boo one of those that boo Outkast. Me and my son STILL bump their first 5 albums. @Detroit. I champion people that make hot songs, albums or features. Jadakiss is bananas on any remix. He steals every song he’s on. Fire. His albums, I don’t know what the fuck happens.@Polotron I don’t like to go against NY at all. I really don’t but, when you look at how long Scarface has been doing it and doing well, I think it’s over 20 years. Lyrics stay fire. KRS, not so much. KRS is a legend a made some shit that will live forever, but face can STILL do it and he became an exec and signed LUDA as his first act! (i think that’s right). So overall, from material to all out making a mark in hip hop, I gotta go with Face.

I was a dj on the radio at the time and when that shit dropped, shiiiiiiit, it was like that was the only shit niggas was bumpin. I mean Mobb Deep was out too and Big and all that but, that Dre album took over. They released a gang of singles from it too. And then they came with Snoop’s “Doggystyle” and that shit did the same thing. We loved that shit up here. And why did you stop at Outkast’s first album? The first 4 were dope as hell. All Classics.

I think, alas, there’s a whole generation of douchebags who think what Jay did “matters” in the least, or was even a real insult.

Meanwhile, Douchebag of New York, Saigon, sold… 3,000 copies of his first album that I’ve seen in Tower AND Best Buy, i.e. decent distribution, no interest.

“ITS BIGGER THAN… HIP HOP” -

This is for all the intelligent people posting.
Look at the history of hip hop, if you know it cool, if not the internet can be used for more then emails, facebook, and youtube.

This is about the evolution of hip hop.. fuck that, more importantly the evolution of Black music in america and the world.

Go back to Blues with BB KING Robert Johnson which is all from the deeeep south.

Take it back up to jazz, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and so many more.

Then to Rock and Roll, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix and so on..

Funk and soul, James Brown the man who basically gave us the blueprint for hip hop.

Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh.

ALL OF THEM ARE ORIGINATORS, INNOVATORS, FIGHTERS, AND HEROES, that inspired the entire world.
All of them were on some real real shit.. and stood for things that hold much more weight than the heaviest iced out chain you could ever buy.
Why you think their music and message has stood the test of time ?

Fast forward to hip hop, or what used to be.
Yall talking about the new criteria for a hot record is if mufucking strippers dance to it ? WTF !

Whats the shelf life of a gucci mane ?

Where is our generations Al Green ? Who is that sposed to be R. Kelly ?
Wheres the church in r&b right now, wheres todays Chaka Khan at ?
Every vocalist sounds like a bitch…sounding like dude from 112.
Wheres todays Teddy P, Marvin Gaye ?

    Jaheim= M.I.A

Nobody wants to hear that cuz fools are too busy looking at that ice and all the bs that goes with it. Yall just want to party.

Who gives a fuck if Kweli loves when whatever bullshit comes on to make that pussy pop. I wont be surprised if he does a record with him just to get paid.
Stop the “hot ” beat that the hoes are bouncing to, take off the vocals and you could put any monkey on it and have him spit the same bullshit.
That alone is enough for you to realize anybody can emulate the same ignorant lyrics over a “hot” beat and have a hit record.

Let guccis acapella rock, aint shit memorable, or quotable. Bitches wont be dancing then.
I see posts on here where hes talking about his ice chain and his dick TWICE. That gets yall open ?
I dont want to hear about your corny ice. Really. Maybe your 10 year old son/daughter does though. They are easily impressed.

    Dude is trash. Period.
Not saying theres not enough room for the trash to exist, if anything it should make the cream rise to the top.. but this bullshit is whats been running/ruining the game now for a decade.
Looking back to the puff era, 95 type shit.. I thought it was bad then. Guess it wasnt so bad after all.

I never went for the okey doke and im not starting now.

Clown asses on here talking about “you dont know whats poppin in the hood”. Guns is whats poppin in the hood. Candles lit on the corner and jailtime.
The hood is a problem. We trying to get out the hood.
The youth are our future, and right now, if yall fail to recognize just how lost the hood is, your a fool.
The trap is a trap for the youth, so when this shit is all a 6 year old is hearing, flashy chains and bentleys over and over, negative ass bullshit.. what do you think is gonna be the case for the future ?

What are we fighting for ? The same shit perpetuated by clowns who got yall tricked into thinking you should start rapping for a chain and a whip, pump some coke, body a few, beat a case and call it a living ?
    GROW UP.
Thats not mc-ing, artistry or even hip hop. Hip hop is something from the heart, not some forced 1 dimensional gimmick ass bullshit.
It seems as if these are the only emotions “rappers” will show you nowadays.
You see it on the net, the tv, and on the radio. Its big business and the labels are only in it to make a dollar.

You cant live in vip 24-7. Take your sunglasses OFF in the club, your a clown. Your chain is fake. You dont own any property.
You ballin on a budget homeboy. the likely hood of you being the “rapper” you see on tv is slim.

Music has always had a message, and is a gauge for our social climate, if this is where we are at..if this is the message, fools being stuck on stupid, lied to by “rappers” who wont rap about what real daily life is, and straight up being brainwashed by the ignorant, redundant consumption of greed and wealth. Im cool with all that. Yall can keep that.
Shit on the real, my culture seems to have been stolen. Not by the usual suspects either.

    These are our current heroes.
Look at Black music of the past 50 years.
If we were to take the last decade of hip hop and put in a time capsule, left behind after all of us who posted on here are dead and gone, shit would be fucking embarrassing for our culture.

Ask yall selves, if this is where we are at now, where is the future of Black music is headed ?

Everything you said is cool, but everyone can’t be James Brown. Every singer now can’t /ain’t going to be Beyonce. We have artist that fill void, everyone should stay in their lane. When I need lyrics, I know who to look for. When I want to get “Wasted” I know who to crank up. There’s music for every situation, so let that man breathe. The problem is the fact that we allow people who have no clue what’s going on tell me what I should be listen to. We got BET telling us that videos are too smart for us! @ since1979.

Wow, thats all you got ?

You clearly do not see the big picture. This isnt about lyrics, or staying in a lane.
This is about a message. This is about culture.
To know your past is to know your future.
Music is a powerful, powerful tool.

It sounds as if some of yall only know about “rap music” and at that post 94.
Aside from any ogs on here, what do you think we were bumping prior to hip hop ?
Yall know what Snoop bumps right..
Zapp, One Way, P-funk, Dramatics, Delfonics, Rick James. All of em made party records. That still bump.

Can yall even go back that far, do yall listen to anything but hip hop ?

1979 You talking about execs at viacom as if your informed. You sound misinformed. Really.
From what youve posted thus far, the execs at viacom are quite happy with you and yours cranking up your beloved gucci, while you get “wasted”.
The same shit your supporting, is the same shit you trying to holla about (on your poorly misguided attempt) on some viacom shit.
The fuck you think they/ viacom is doing with all this programming, pumping this shit out… making the hood smart ?

Pick a lane, you cant be co signing gucci and screaming viacom in the same breath.

Heads are dumb and dumber now and it seems its around to stay.

    WAKE THE FUCK UP !

Do yall not see the connection, the hood stays stuck getting “wasted” and living in the club 24-7, striving to obtain moronic shit like the gucci song Nina posted a link to.. “watch cost a bentley”. Fuck outta here. Last thing id evvvvvver do if I were rich is cop a bentley.

We been done heard about Jacob 10 years ago.
    NEXXXXXT.
Who really wants to hear about a gotdamn iced out watch in a song, for the umpteenth time ?
Apparently some of yall still do.
    Its almost 2010 yall.

If you gonna boast about shit, make it count, boast about your property you own.
How long do you think it will take for you to even RENT a bentley ?
Try Nevuary 1st. STOP THE PIPE DREAMS.

If you know you aint close to that level, why do yall ride so hard for bullshit. The wool has been pulled son.
Is this your reality, hol up, stop.. since reality is subjective, better yet actuality.
    CMON SON !
If your not part of the solution your part of the problem.
Im finished with this post, CJ you def got the nets going nuts with this one.

One thing Hip hop is or was, was “I do this daily, regardless of a dollar”.

    Ignorance is bliss.

  • I’m quite informed. Gucci Mane has no affect on me because I know fact from fiction. My kids don’t listen to that because its not for them to listen to. Its our job as adults to school kids on what’s real and what’s not. I listened to everything as a kid, but my mother always school me to what’s real. Like I said before I don’t have an issue with Gucci, I have more of an issue with the lack of balance on tv and on the radio.
You an older dude so I know you remember how on Rap City you could see Geto Boys, Queen L, Rakim, and King Tee in the order. We don’t have that now. That’s why I have a problem with Viacom and radio. They don’t provide any balance. That’s why I don’t watch MTV/BET/Vh1. There are plenty of good positive music being made, yet the powers that be tell us we aren’t smart enough to get it.
I feel where you coming from brotha and I’ve enjoyed the convo, but I feel the issue is WAAAAAYYYY bigger that liking Gucci Mane. We need to be more vocal about getting all forms of hiphop played on tv and radio.

  • Lawrence of Flatbush

re: Like That– I appreciate your post but you know that Robert Johnson was ONLY a great performer/musician, and that EVERY one of his songs cuts and pastes from others? It wasn’ quite ‘biting’ because very little value was placed on lyrical originality. If you go back to the blues and other black music 1925-1935, Robert Johnson is still GREAT but original he ain’t.

    BURR!!

I meant that I’ve seen Saigon’s piece of shit in Target and Best Buy… where you can NOT find, say, Skyzoo… who’s nice tho’ if Jay burps it sounds like the smell comes out Skyzoo’s breath.

@Lawrence of Flatbush, good looking out homie. @LikeThatY’all, keep kickin’ that knowledge. Oh, and I almost forgot, someone mentioned Killer Mike. How could I forget Killer Mike? If you go to youtube and listen to Chamillionaire’s “Southern Takeover”, Killer Mike murders the first verse. Probably one of the top ten verses in rap music of all time. Real Talk. He’s a beast.

    Fully dedicated
So real that the radio will neva play
    But that’s cool

Neva know when they gone put you in a chokehold
This is for you new niggas hoein’ for the radio

What’s on the radio? Propaganda, mind contol
And turnin’ it on is like puttin’ on blindfold
Cuz when you bringin’ the real you don’t get ro-ta-tion
Less you take ova the station
And yeah I know it’s part of they plan
To make us think it’s all about party dance
And yo it might sound good when you spittin’ ya raps
But in reality, don’t nobody live like that
You wanna know what kind of nigga I am
Let me tell you bout the nigga I’m not
I don’t fuck wit da cops
Platinum don’t mean that it gotta be hot
I ain’t gotta love it, even it they play it a lot
You can hear it when you walk the streets
    How many people they reach
How they use music to teach
A radio program ain’t a figure of speech
    Don’t sleep
Cuz YOU could be a radio freq.

Everytime anyone news show refers to Gucci, it should be in the form of a question.

    ie Gucci Mane, rapper?

  • I tend to agree with where Since1979 is comin’ from.

I don’t think stuff like Gucci would be AS MUCH of an issue if music outlets were more receptive to different types of the music. But when the amount of music getting played becomes 80% audio fuckery, that’s when it is a problem.

A lot of people love to wax nostalgic on ‘back in the day’, as do I, but a lot of us are very good at only remembering the good. Sure, we can yap about GangStarr and Rakim and BDP and all that… but we neglect to mention shit like that “B-Girls” record, or Doo Doo Brown, or MC Brains which was getting just as much airplay right along with the good stuff. But like Since1979 said, that was a time where you could turn on a Rap City and see a Rakim video followed by Doo Doo Brown followed by Scarface followed by MC Brains. We don’t really have much of that diversity being exposed on that level anymore.

What causes me to SMH is when the old head, region separation comments start, without even realizing those same people some are trying to diss are actually still listening/watching the same stuff the young are. I downloaded them 3 Gucci joints off of datpiff. Maybe 4 cuts I like. A lot of it ain’t for me. Does that mean I ain’t from the streets or have no clue about Hip Hop music or can’t relate? Don’t think so.

@ L.T.Y. It is bigger than hip hop.
