Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel, What Ya’ll Talking About?

b4JayZBeanieSegalMemphisBleekFreeWayandYoungGunz

There were these two brothers that grew up on my block when I was a kid, in Brooklyn. Glenn was my age and Wayne was a bit older, maybe by one or two years. We ran as a crew with some of the other kids that lived on Lincoln Place. Them two brothers had that sibling rivalry thing going something kinda strong though. As much as we all loved to see a good fight, especially the ones between two girls for how much dirtier they fought and with the percentage of a young boob or two popping out to our delight, there was something between them brothers scrapping in the street that turned me off. Primal in the emotions fired, guttural in how hard they went for each other’s throats, I hated to see that shit. Even in my young mind, I felt that shit wasn’t right.

Back when Ice Cube broke off from N.W.A. resulting in one of Hip Hop’s first major break ups, Cube’s No Vaseline, fired with crippling, nerve piercing precision, precision that could only be developed through once having an intimate family-like relationship with his foes, I was proud and confident that New York groups like A Tribe Called Quest and E.P.M.D. would never break up on some corny shit like that. That beef, entertaining as it was, was brutal, was ugly. “We ain’t built like that out here” I thought. Heh. I had a lot to learn.

Who woulda thought this day would come, with Jay-Z, the once undisputable leader of the Roc and his former war time general Beanie Sigel beefing like this? In public. Back when they ran as fam, Jay comfortable in his cleaned up position as budding politician, the Roc’s elder statesmen with respect cemented worldwide for how he single-handedly decapitated all comers with the skills of a master samurai, in the name of the Roc, king of that thing of theirs that he created with Dame and Biggs. Beanie Sigel, the Broad Street Bully enlisted from the nation’s true murder capital Philly, the Boar in place as the newer, more savage gladiator, standing loyally by the young king’s side, ever ready to break loose on anyone with complete unbridled savagery. The two battle styles complementing the other like hot to cold, Jigga the Shogun’s Decapitator, effortlessly felling lesser emcees with ease, grace, clean, swift, surgical. Mack the Beast, a caveman reveling in masochistically pulling off limb from body, messy, muddy, ugly, an animal drunk  in the inferno of the  bloodlust.  One would always be prudent in believing wholeheartedly that Beanie Sigel is dead serious and not one bit fucking around when he menacingly barks out “Get Down Or Lay Down!!!” Back then, after Hov had been dazed, stunned/stung  by Nas’ Ether and now a target to every once  mute rapper now emboldened with the realization that Jay could get got, that he breathed the same air they did, Beans took center stage in the wars that ensued as hitman and executioner for the Roc as every camp in the city tooled up on the quest to claiming rap’s Holy Grail, the elusive crown as the King Of New York.  D-Block, Terror Squad, Nas, Murder Inc., Diplomats, Freeway, State Property, Roc-a-fella. What glorious times it was. World War Rap. Cam going at Nas, Jadakiss and Beans engaged in a unholy battle royale like no other. A war no man was safe from. By the time the unruly Dipset seceded from their brief alliance with the Roc, beef hit code red, a pandemic. Hot 97 became New York raps’ Ground Zero, murderous freestyles let loose on any given night, from any given camp, live on Funk Master Flex’s show, multiple shots firing guaranteed. In the shadows of the smoldering ruins that was once the Towers, hell had been unleashed throughout the five boroughs. Once the smoke cleared, the dust settled, the Roc remained upright and dead center in the mix. It was etched in stone that Jay would be King, Beanie by his side, designated goon and shooter. They said it themselves in that La La La (Excuse Me Miss) song and video.

Nothing remains the same. The Roc as we knew it no longer exists. Beans has been replaced by Kanye, the same cat he once ridiculed for being gay, and Jay has moved on to bigger and better things, from being the King Of New York to holding the throne as rap’s new Head Of State. Him and Obama texting each other as mutual fans encouraging the other to go further. In the tailwind of Jay’s dizzying ascent as Leader of the Free world, Sigel stays left, far behind, a general still, but abandoned with no nation to defend, no army to lead. Last week’s ‘What You Talkin About (I Ain’t Your Average Cat)’ a Jay-Z diss fired by Beanie that came out of nowhere, symbolically leaked the same evening Jay opened the 2nd game of the World Series between New York and Philly with an incredible performance of his uber hit “Empire State Of Mind” with Alicia Keys. Contrary to how my homie Paul Cantor feels that the song was a non-event,What You Talkin About’ has commanded everyone’s attention. Simple in beat and production yes, Sigel bares his soul cautiously, his firearms boldly as he clearly spells out his issues with Hov. How Hov basically cut him off when he got locked up due to legal troubles a few years back, never once visiting him or writing to the imprisoned brawler, how the once personal relationship he shared with Jay had been corrupted by the business relationship they had. The shots were so huge that Jay himself was forced to respond, claiming he had done all he could on behalf of Beans, setting him up to capitalize from a label deal and clothing company he helped to establish, how he doesn’t understand how Sigel could have any complaints at all towards Jay.

I like rap beef, actually, I love it. I also dig ‘What You Talkin About’ for its simplicity, for it’s honesty, for Beans’ flow. Still, I’m a bit uncomfortable with it in the same way I was when I’d watch them brothers from my block go at it. It’s embarrassing, it hurts the soul, it’s grotesque in how it exposes that nothing is sacred in the world of business. It’s sad to see brother against brother.  This reminds me of a conversation I had with Clark Kent right after Jay and former mentor Jaz-O aired their family dirty laundry out on mixtape, airwave, wax and Youtube. Clark didn’t feel right by how it played it out, wishing they had worked their issues out behind closed doors. Maintain the sanctity of family above all. “Them beefing in public is disgusting” he expressed. I agreed with what he said then as I do now. This is that same shit. I would prefer to see a Jay vs. 50 Cent show unfold. Anyday. That’s some bloodshed I’m looking for, along with the shits and giggles. This one, I pass, watching from the sidelines not to see the car accident it can potentially become, but to witness how it plays out.

As some of us takes sides, I can only remain neutral as I stand in neither of those men’s shoes, I’m not privy as to what went on, kept away and hidden from the public’s scrutiny. As much as I believe  Beanie in his being upset with Jay for pulling back on the friendship, for not moving from beyond the business, I also hear where Jay is coming from. Jay’s perspective has always been about self first, always. And he never got it twisted, even in the midst of rap dynastys, alliances, feuds and turf wars. From my personal experience, artists as a whole in the industry are known to be a selfish lot and to some, Jay’s rep is legendary in how he has been known to exhibit said selfish tendencies. I can’t honestly say what any man should do, all I know is what I know. And what I know is that I don’t understand how, during this age of the Information Revolution, where there are millions of ways to communicate with each other, how two men that were once brothers cannot summon the willingness to communicate, to talk, to employ diplomacy in discussing where the fuck things went wrong.

All I know is that if ever any of my peoples ever talk greasy about me in the streets, or on their blogs and what not, fuck what types of shit they said, I’m reaching out to them. Please believe if the homie Dallas Penn ever fired shots, that nigga will be getting a cell call from me on some “Yo B, what the fuck kinda crazy shit I’m reading about me over on your site? What you talking about?” Same with Byron Crawford, Marcus Troy and Eskay . Internets or real life, man to man talk has never gone out of style. To me, just like how Jaz-O acted out, it don’t matter what Beans is saying in public, as the President, I’m making calls, as Jay might want to.  Take notes from Barack Jay, smooth this out. Diplomacy trumps bullshit everytime the time. Fuck a handout if that’s what former fam is reaching for, but where there’s smoke there’s fire. This is not a good look, when most of your peoples is crying the same thing. Jaz, DeHaven, Dame, Beans. Some of them rifts can’t be worked out, that Dame shit is too sensitive, too soon, but this one, a phone call B, send that man a limo to pick him up, drive around and talk over it like men, like brothers, like Roc La Familia. Jay’s way too big to respond in kind, by releasing a record, yes, but he can’t ever be too big to call his peoples.

I don’t like this, its raw, and ugly and embarrassing. I love beef but I’m off this. Like Clark said back then, this shit here is disgusting. It’s bigger than rap. Please work this out is what I’m talking about.

We do need a Curtis and Shawn beef.

  • Gotta hold Jay accountable on this one. Not only is he (allegedly) dismissing Sigel’s calls, but if Big Homie truly called the feds on Beans, that’s a serious no-no. Jay needs to fall the fuck back and get back to pollying with his old crew. Otherwise where’s the ‘Familia’ in ‘Roc La Familia’?!?! Dynasty Pt. 2 is necessary.

If Beanie is correct in stating Jay initiated his removal from a Blueprint 3 concert via police escort the friendship/business ventures between the two are dead.

50 Cent is clearly baiting Jay into verbal spoken or rhymed response. It is clear 50 Cent loves competing. This sense of public competition makes Hip Hip a rarity in the music industry. Baits that I have noticed: Flight 187 song and video – mentioning Tru Life whom it seems Jay-Z no longer works with, various interviews – most recently discussing his uncle in jail with Beanie, and the effect of Freeway converting to Islam on Jay’s image. Positioning Kelly Rowland as the main actress of his new video is quite strategic. It is even quite possible 50 Cent and Jay-Z communicate with each other. Even so, it is clear 50 Cent has long list of information about Jay-Z just waiting to be released to the internet. Jay-Z is most likely uninterested of any of this depending on how sensitive the info. If Jay-Z responds he’ll aim right for Ciara with a Bow Bow joke – i.e. “I got guns the size of lil Bow Wow” – Wanksta..Most likely, this will all be subliminal. The event would be entertaining if both sides could GUARANTEE no acts of violence from selves or associates. That’s almost impossible to ensure. Good post as usual and very well writtten. You have an excellent website.

Bad news for 50, is that his album already leaked. He is dieing to “beef” if Jay but a song at this point will not save that album from flopping!

But no one told Sig to bust his gun and get a Fed case or to keep being a livewire. You cant babysit a grown man. And if Jay and Dame gave them crooked cntracts, that’s on them ethically. This is why artists should know their worth and how to pimp the music game.

Lyrically, I love Jay but this dude stay turning his back on his homies. It ain’t about the handout shit. It’s about loyalty and everyone coming up together. I got 2 homies on this planet. One just passed (r.i.p.), so I got one left. (I used to run a rap crew too so this applies to both sides) If I ever got big money like that, my people already know that they would be with me. Like I said, right now that would be one extra nigga but back in the day that would have been 6. Not saying Jay need to take care of a nigga like that’s his son but that nigga did say “Roc La Familia”, so what’s that mean? You can’t take a phone call from a nigga? You callin the cops on ya boy when he’s at the show. I don’t think I’ve ever called the cops on ANYBODY, EVER. You go to court and when the judge asks if you will be responsible for your boy upon his release and you say “NO” and ya boy goes back to jail? Really? You and Dame sell the Roc and then you go and buy the shit back behind his back and then air the nigga out when he’s down and out on “Lost One”? Stole Jaz’s name, rode his dick for your own purposes and the just dogs this nigga? Jay, you had help my dude, the whole way. Ok, niggas didn’t act all the way right all the time. You got the power now. Pull them niggas together and tell them how it’s going to be. If they don’t like it, then fuck em. But you callin’ the cops on ya boys? Nigga that’s some foul shit and it shows how you really think. I’m done.

  • I most def see both sides of the situation. As much of a fuck up as Beans has become, Jay that’s still your brother. At the end of the day, he doesn’t owe that man a dime, but he does owe him a conversation. Unlike the Jaz, situation all Beans seems to want is some guidance and real talk. I’ve only got 4 real friends, and I can’t see a point where I would refuse to take their calls.

  • I’ve said before, that usually when brothers feel a type of way and not speak to each other, typically its something so petty that outsiders don’t and won’t understand. I liked “What Yall Talkin Bout” for its flow and its the heartfelt blue collar rap from Beans that I miss, but clearly this song is him reaching out to Jay the best way that HE knows how. Just like 2 brothers beefing, in the Charlamagne interview, Beans warns that this song is not an open invitation for any rapper to try to get at Jay, because you’ll feel his wrath. Try to jump in between two brothers fighting, and they’ll both destroy you. Which is why 50 should mind his business on this one. He’s one of the wealthiest entertainers in the game, however, he’s caught more than one L as of recent. Jay would do much more than magnify those losses. 50 might should mind his business on this one. Perhaps Jay, Beans, and Dame need to take that limo ride.

Q: Who forced Beans to make precisely ZERO classics albums, and maybe– MAYBE– one decent one?

If he wants to say Roc killed his greater artistic vision, alright, but there’s no evidence to that in anything else he’s done, save certain soulful moments like his verse on “OB4CL2.”

As others have noted, Jay wasn’t the one getting popped on gun charges, weed, this, that and the other shit too.

No love for Jay like CJ has but get off my nuts is the correct statement for Jay to make.

I feel you on your message here. The thing thats sad here is that most artist see Jays ways and try to emulate them instead of making there own way. Case and point any group that has been together in the past 7yrs has done the same thing the Roc has done blow up then break up. Its gotta be true that Jay is a user first Dehaven to JazO to Dame and once he became the man he uses the Philly cats steals there flow then acts like this shits ok.. Most fans are riders and will excuse him for hios ways but these folks also lack ethics. But when u rich as Jay who cares right. At the end of the day his last album solidifies him as the greatest rapper of all time but it dosent excuse him for being the sucker ass friend so many dudes are now and days. If this was the street where Jay claims to come from he would be lookin more like Alpo then Rich or Az…

    Jack,

I think your missing one important key, Beanie violated with the line about “making B look at you sideways”, that’s not Jay-z’s little high school girlfriend, or even “wifey”, THAT’S his real life legal WIFE. Remember your story on your blog entry: http://daily-math.com/weblog/?p=968#more-968, but to the lesser degree.

Beanie completely played his hand when he referenced a wife and/or child, that’s NOT gansta. Just can’t see Jay giving him a pass for that one.

  • All’s fair in love and war.

If Jay tried to stop beans from eating and wouldn’t release him from his contract then that also equally affects Beans’ wife, kids and perhaps even the rest of his family.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. What will hurt me, however, is stopping my potential six figure income by leaving me languishing on a non-existent record label like Jay did to Beans.

I repeat — all is fair in love and war.

Your “all’s fair” comment is correct, assuming what Beanie (and 50 Cent) is saying is true. There can be other factor’s involved. Who is the say even if Jay was “President” he could really just let someone out their contract (key word: contract). And why gripe 2 years later??? Oh that’s right Beanie is assuming Jay is dissing him on BP3. That’s sure as hell who I thought Jay was going at (NO!)

I read the paul cantor thing and thought to myself, beans said many times its not about money but that how paul’s blog came across.

Even that clown joe budden said some things that were off on a vlog like beans was doing it as joe does all the time to capitialize…

Anybody who listens to lyrics can say jay was talkin real slick on bp3 i dont blame beans for feeling some shots were thrown his way bcuz im sure many of us did think that listening no?? or at least in the direction of state prop, and dame and a few others

    Truthfully they were like family
and even if you not gonna fuck wit your brother
he gonna know y you not fucking wit him and you dont say nuffin on him indirect in the public for others to judge him also

First, GREAT ARTICLE! Well written, satelliting around the typical neighborhood street brawl.

…”it exposes that nothing is sacred in the world of business.”

That’s the single issue. IMO, Jay has no conscience when dollar bills are concerned. He has been bought and sold many times over. It’s evident by some of the moves he’s making. He is an opportunist whose meteoric rise has less to do with his marginal rap skills and more to do with the powerful machine he is aligned with.

Beans needs to understand that the gravy train, aka the roc, is over. J never sticks around long enough to see the smoldering ashes.

This was the third part in the holy trinity of this beef recap that I knew would make it complete….Beans’ reply, Jay’s reply, and Combat Jack’s analysis….yet and still, it left a little to be desired. Not to lump you in with a lot of the other feedback people have been saying, but it seems like people are giving Jay a pass on this due to his stature *paws*….He may be at Alexander the Great-level of commanding the rap game, but a lot of people seem to be looking at him through rose-colored glasses. It may not be the best situation people want to see – “this shit is disgusting” – but when is hip hop ever roses?? Let’s call a spade a spade and start the CALL BEANS campaign, cuz Jay was absolutely wrong if he did all these things. No amount of Obama texts or O Magazine cover stories is gonna change that…Beans took an ether-esque foot to Jay’s arse, and there’s nothing wrong with that….all in all, respect on your piece….

  • You know what part of this is really disgusting though?

50 at Beanie’s side [ll] on that radio interview, egging the whole shit on.

Just as someone pointed out, 50 is on some strategic shit right now. The lil’ disses here and there, Kelly Rowland in the video, and now the Beanie shit. And on top of that, Beanie is kinda comin’ off as way too oblivious for someone that should be sharp enough to see that shit for what it is. It’s the same way, 50 brought Remy out on stage as the Joe shit was still relevant, the same way he had Jones and Juelz on stage with him when the Cam thing was going on… and now he’s all in Beanie’s corner on the radio, co-signing on some “tell ‘em why you mad son” shit? Irony.

That said, yeah, Jay gotta make a move to clean this up. Especially since it doesn’t appear (yet) to be something Jay can’t fix. It doesn’t look like one of those other “Jay owes me for this, Jay owes me for that” type situations. It seems like dude has been genuinely insulted by some of Jay’s actions and statements. Jay should at least straighten that out with him.

And he keep asking you to help him out. Hell, throw in the fact 10 years ago you hit the lottery for like $100,000 and gave all of your boys $2000 each, go on a trip to Brazil. • TH — that right there is a very interesting analogy. I feel you on that one. I have been in a similar situation (always supporting a homie who just can’t get his shit together, and we been thru thick and thin together). Niggas always asking for shit until finally I got married this summer and I have a family, I can’t be supporting my own son as well as someone else’s! I feel Jay. He’s not Beanie’s Santa Claus that Beans wants Jay to be for him. At least not anymore. And for that Beans has decided that blackmail is the route to take. A very bitchmade move on Beans’s part. I sympathize for Beans only so much since, like a coach in any sport, all Jay did was put Beans in a position to win. That’s all any coach can do for their team. And Jay put the entire Roc in a position to win out of the virtue of Jay cosigning them. I think the only ones who really understood that were Bleek, Free and Chris. The rest of them suffered from delusions of grandeur.

And to ocen zeuo — Free’s album that 50 was involved with (Free At Last) was Free’s best body of work he ever released. You should check it out. Mobb’s album on G Unit wasn’t bad either. MOP just released an album, just not on G Unit. And no one cares about Spider Loc.

Jay-Z is a business man and music is his business. All the peeps he has purpotedly shitted on are all people he met in the business. So as much as they ran together and created this ‘FAMILY’, it was still all business. He realized that and unfortunately others didn’t. Jay-Z is and was Rocafella, and when he realized that he was shouldering and making money for everybody, he decided to shed the extra weight. If that’s not true, how come nobody else seems to be doing great on their own. He was the brains!!!

Personally I don’t really agree with the whole Jay being selfish etc. His REAL niggaz are all eating. Bleek, Tata etc. None of them is sitting there griping coz Jay got ‘em. All the other dudes who came coz of his rap skillz he sees as business partners if you ask me.

Jay: He has always been about self and quick to cast aside anyone who threatens/dosent fall in line. (Amil??) I believe Beans when he says why did Jay always drop a video or record during my promo time. I feel he did the same shit to Buddens and anyone else he thought could steal his shine. He couldn’t stop Kanye so he had to just play the “big” brother role (next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay!?!) There is no reason Beans books shouldn’t have been healthy and he should have got visits and letters. He should have let Beans go if he really wanted to leave and had a serious offer. point blank.
Beans: Who told you to tank your career with drugs and senseless violence? High speed chases, tossin syrup, xanax, and oxys out the window, punching old men in the face when they honk at you cause your double parked? constant pills and assault/shooting charges and jail terms. How can Jay grow into a business man with you by his side? Sam didn’t have the luxury of cutting off nicky in casino the way jay did you. and it’s your fault. You went with dame after the break up. The one you say robbed you, because you said jay was never really there and it was more personal with dame. Now Jay left you, huh? I expected more from you than this shit, you were the one who I never thought would violate the codes of the streets and being up on the radio with 50 when you know he is just there to push his own agendas is bullshit. you lost.

First of all, I hope you’re reading thisn Combat Jack. I just want to say that your description and usage of metaphore in describing Jay-Z and Beans is impeccable, and indicative that that you may be holdin some lyrical skills on the low. That said, I agree with you from a “man” standpoint. My view, however, is that Jay-z has done some cats wrong and these are dudes who may not roll together or even like eachother. It’s not a concerted “eff jay-z” thing. They all say the same thing. Dude does his homies dirty. Throw in DeHaven, Calvin Klein, and Amil to that ex-friends list of Jayz and it’s obvious. Peace fam.

What up CJ? You hit the topic square on brother. I know a few things about that same type of issue. Men being too proud to step to each other to work it out on some one-on-one shit. It’s clear that Beans had no other way of getting at Jay. I want to believe that, cus that’s the only way he would go down this route…but damn, what an ugly route to take. Beans, Jay, please u-turn this 18-wheeler of bullshit and holla at each other. Yall fucking up my Roc music memories. Yep, on some selfish shit. Stop fucking up the music!

BTW, you know about Lincoln Place??

I would actually rather see this beef than some WWE main event rap beef. This kind of beef might make artists think twice before shitting on their own crew and not supporting people the way they should. Beans used all RELEVANT points instead of saying Jay’s a camel or can’t rap for shit no more. Beans is using facts instead of the regular bullshit people beef about without even meeting each other.
Some beefs are necessary to move on and this was one of them. If jay is too big to come down and talk to Beans, he’s gonna get checked on record. The fact that Jay said, “he’s got a lot to complain about” just shows the frame of mind he’s in. He feels like he don’t owe nobody nothing, but you owe THAT MAN.

Great blog post, CJ. Most grown-man commentary that I’ve seen on the topic. I fux with Jay and Beans, hard. So I agree wit you, this one hurts to watch.

We got a major problem in today’s society with taking responsibility and owning up to the fucking consequences.

Beans had it all, and blew it all. Don’t get nothing twisted. This IS about money. The root of all evil. Beans blew his, and even worse, he blew what Roc-A-Fella set up for him, his family, and his boys to eat off of for many years. THAT’S what Jay’s response was to him.

I would side with Beans if he re-opened State Property and tried to build a buzz with that, and went to Jay to get down with Roc Nation, and Jay dissed on that. But Beans ain’t got shit going.

Jay could be a snake, I don’t know. But, dude set Beans up with his deal, on the strength of Quest Love’s word, set him up with a label, and a clothing line.

Beans stayed in and out of jail and courts. Stayed fucking with drugs. Jay AND BEY were photo’ed going in and out of courts in Philly over the years. I’m pretty sure Jay had to cut the cord. He damn sure wasn’t co-signing for Beans AGAIN in court, when Beans didn’t even trust himself. We all know folks that just can’t leave them streets alone, even at 35 years old.

What makes him think Jay called the cops and feds on him? Wasn’t Jay on stage performing? Beans brings that kind of attention (the po-po kind) to himself by himself by the shit that he’s still into. Who knows what Beans was in the middle of, prior to that. Take responsibility for your shit.

I lost a lot of respect for Beans on this one. As a man, you build yourself back up on your own, but not by tearing the next man down. Black people really need to stop co-signing this shit. Dude need to grow up.

  • dope read and i agree with your whole take on fam beefing with each other. that’s probably why em never responded to royce’s tracks or interviews. you basically only heard one of side the story. some thing’s aren’t meant to be seen or heard. it’s like beating your kids in public.

  • Coming from the streets i’ve known many dudes, that i would say fall amoung the line of a Beanie. Now those dudes were supposed to be these tough guys, so when i hear Beans speak and you can hear the hurt in that man’s voice. It is really sad, because things should never get this bad between “friends”. Hov needs to call that man and fix this. I don’t really want to see these two beef, even if i love a good rap beef.
