Marvelous Color NYC

Thursday night, December 17, I attended the brilliant Marvelous Color art exhibit, invited by good dude Riggs Morales. I took the lil dun duns with me and called Uncle Dallas to join us before heading to the LRG party. It was a blast!

Luke Cage looking fresh to death, bullet holes and all.
The grand opening of Somos Arte’s newest Marvel Comics exhibit, Marvelous Color is officially underway.
The first Black comic book hero, T’Challa don’t play that!
This new show celebrates over 40 years of Marvel Comics in their use of iconic African American superheros in their pages. The focus will be six of Marvel Comics’ popular super hero characters: Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, The Falcon, Blade and James Rhodes (Iron Man/War Machine). The exhibit features artwork and appearances by some of the best artist in the business including Gene Colan, Eric Battle, Shawn Martinbrough, ChrisCross, Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Jae Lee and John Romita Jr & Sr.

Finally, a thigh shot of Storm with all her Black womanly curves.
Last night was the official exclusive VIP and press reception at the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) on 408 West 58th Street, (between 9th and 10th Avenues).
James Rhodes packing real heat.
The exhibit officially opens to the general public today, December 18 and will run through February 26th, 2010.
Don’t call him a side-kick.
Among the guests were Marvel Comics Editor in chief and featured artist, Joe Quesada, Bobbito Garcia, DJ Mic Boogie, Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show), Reiko Aylesworth (24, SGU) and a host of others.
The show is presented and produced by Somos Arte’s Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez (Curator) and Shirley Miranda-Rodriguez (Executive Producer) with additional support from the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute. Associate Producers are Rigg Morales (Shady Records) and Reginald Hudlin (Modern Family, Everybody Hates Chris and Marvel Comics’ Black Panther). Sponsorship provided by Shady Records.

My favorite piece, a retro looking Blade drawn by 85 year old O.G. Gene Colan, who is blind in one eye and has limited peripheral vision. How dope is this?
To anyone that’s ever fallen in love with comic books, and who lives in or near NYC, you mos def owe yourselves a visit to this classic exhibit. Nuff Said True Believers!
That’s what I’m talkin’ about! I’d love to see that. Reminds me of my “Black Like Me” series’on Poisonous Paragraphs.
One.
People say that rap is a dead form. I tend to believe different, I believe it’s just evolving, and staying current. Prime example is what we’ve been doing over here… Check out Kryptik – V.I.P ft. Crooked I. Just google it, I don’t wanna spam a link. waste snake
Thank you so much for coming out and for your support! If anyone wants to join the mailing list for upcoming “Marvelous Color” events send an email to marvelous@somosarte.com

I am a 57yrs. young female and have been reading comic books since I was a little girl and sneaking them out my brothers room. It’s great to see African Americans as heros with super powers. Wow the art work was amazing.
Damn I hope I didn’t mis this event, I’ve been collecting comics since the age of 12, And still have everyone of them cardboarded and zipplocked. I dreded the day when I would have to sale any of them, but I will only just to feed my newborn baby girl. But I surely will keep the ones of color (black super hero’s) for her to marvel at..
