Come And Get Yo’ Soul Food, Well Well…

If there’s one thing that perturbs the fukk outta me, it’s when certain White folk pull the “you people are so sensitive” card out. It could be the most latent racist shit in the world, and you’ll still get at least one paleskin breakin’ that line out like it’s no big deal. Truth be told, they’ve gotten just as touchy about “reverse racism” in recent years, so it’s especially irritating when the “sensitive” card comes out.
But as a Black man, I gotta say… niggas are gettin’ wild soft over this NBC Black History Month menu shit.
See, I’m hip to the game (riiiiiiiiight!). I’m privy to underlying racist motives, stereotypes, generalizations, and all that. But I gotta… no offense… call a spade a spade on this one. Sometimes, we got a way of gettin’ our already-high blood pressure up about things that don’t necessarily call for it. This appears to be one such situation. In this case, a Black woman who’d been lobbying for years to get a soul food meal on the menu was able to do so, and what resulted was a mega-backlash from nigroes who prob’ly went home and ate the same shit last night. No dis to the homie Brother Question ?uestlove, but that nigga looks like he’s enjoyed some soul food in his lifetime too.

I’ve been on different message boards over the years, and I’ve seen this topic brought up numerous times in different ways. One I remember most is “Black people- do you get embarrassed when eating chicken around White people?” My answer then was the same as it is now… hell nah. I don’t see Mexicans hangin’ their heads in shame over tacos, as well they shouldn’t. Chinese people don’t get around other races and start hiding their shrimp fried rice. I’ve known Italian people who wouldn’t eat if they couldn’t eat pizza. Therefore, I could care less who’s around- I’ll even eat a piece of chicken around other chickens, cause I just don’t give a fuck. What’s next, we gonna stop listenin’ to Hip-Hop?
Of course, all my brothas don’t eat chicken and watermelon, talk broken English and drug-sellin’… but come on now. We gon’ have a fit over something seemingly done with good intentions because it’s tied in with an old-ass stereotype? Sure, we eat things other than that- tacos, shrimp fried rice, and pizza being some of them- but y’all niggas know y’all like soul food. Personally, I’m more offended that they got Aquafina on the shit… when’s the last time you seen a buncha niggas sittin’ around drinkin’ Aquafina?

I know us Black folk generally don’t like havin’ our business put out there anyway, but we shoulda been past worrying about what others think about us enjoying shit that we like. We know we eat it, just like White people know they kiss their dogs in the mouth. There’s even a whole got-damn movie about it. Furthermore, it’s 2010 and we got a President that grew up eatin’ it. So let’s stop bein’ ashamed of cornbread and greens and shit. To paraphrase the great Chris Rock, if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a chicken wing any time soon, bite the SHIT out of it.
-D!
LOL @ the non-swine soul food w/Aquafina.
But there’s pork in the cornbread (Jiffy uses LARD)…
“I’ll even eat a piece of chicken around other chickens, cause I just don’t give a fuck”
^^^^^^^Funny shit.
Comida is comida. If I need nourishment, I’m eating whatever I like. Chicken, corn bread, greens, & for dessert, a piece of watermelon Now & Laters, washed down with a grape soda. Fuck a stereotype.
When it comes to the sensitivity factor, I think Blacks & Whites are too quick to point fingers, at one another as well as themselves. A lot of times, like Danj pointed out, it’s really not that serious, until one person causes a stir, then it becomes a big deal to whatever flock of sheep are looking for a “cause”. This is one of those times.
Sometimes, shit just is what it is, without any types of conspiracy involved whatsoever..
The thing about stereotypes is they are true but others inscribe pathology on and condescend to one engaging in a stereotyped behavior.
Engaging in a stereotyped behavior among those inscribing that pathology is awkward, to say the least. I’m not saying black folks should internalize that pathology and feel ashamed among themselves like some fancy n*ggas do. You just have to know your audience.
@Worley
Word. See, similar to the rich niggas who feel shame for their connection with the stereotype, my problem is the shameless person who embraces the stereotype under the guise of misguided ownership. They go out of their way to be as “Black” as possible, as if there’s some point to be proven. Shucking & jiving for the sake of other’s expectations, be it their friends, or strangers.
Cosign. I don’t know any race that don’t like fried chicken and watermelon. Anyone who stops eatin it because they afraid of how it looks or that their feeding into a stereotype, needs to get learn how to think for themselves. You’re never gonna please racists anyway. You’re skin color is wrong.
BTW, that menu is making me hungry.
You won’t see us Greeks NOT roasting a whole lamb outside on Easter just cuz My Big Fat Greek Wedding made us all look retarded. At this one Greek Easter gathering I’ve been to in VA, their Muslim neighbors come over to partake in the lamb eating too! Wasn’t it Carlos Mencia, in one of his older, not as shitty as today’s shows that said something about the food stereotypes? That it just means we’re all hungry. See you at Boston Market!
jalapeno cornbread is kind of offensive.
I’m co-signing Worley on this one…well said, now I’m going to get me some chicken! Peace to my Brother Esteem.
This post and the comments remind me of Dave Chappelle’s For What It’s Worth standup special. “Nigga what the fuck is juice? I want some grape drink! mmm, it’s purple. Sugar, water, purple, those are the ingredients.” Haha sorry if ya’ll don’t know what the fux i’m talking about but that shit is hilarious.
Just ate that yesterday!!! LOL
This post made my day!
